I Wonder, Do We see the Destruction Being Caused?

I Wonder, Do we See the Destruction being Caused? draws inspiration from the poem, “On Virtue,” by enslaved poet, Phillis Wheatley. Inspiration also comes from her words to Reverend Samson Occom, “In every breast, God has implanted a principle, which we call love of freedom; it’s impatient of oppression.” Each stitch threads her words of resilience and power and weaves them into the canvas.  

Though Wheatley was denied freedom herself, her work explores the idea that freedom comes when you find your entire self, become whole, and blossom right where you are, no matter your circumstances. 

Because of my own hardships and healings, I identify with Wheatley.  As I weave her words onto the canvas—I weave them into myself—combining my themes of pain and triumph, exclusion and acceptance with hers of wholeness and the freedom that comes with it. I stitch us each together into a multifaceted, multi-layered patchwork of life itself.  

I Wonder, Do we See the Destruction being Caused is an awakening and a plea to humanity that says this: destruction is going on.
